Take an early start to make the most of a full day. When you arrive in Skye you’ll find a host of historic castles and standing stones, craft shops and old croft museums. Above all you’ll discover amazing scenery – a real adventure amongst jagged mountains, sweeping moors and dramatic waterfalls.

A visit to Eilan Donan Castle, the setting for the cult film Highlander and the superb Lochalsh Woodland Gardens on the Balmacara Estate. Make sure you visit Portree – Skye’s main shopping town.

There’s a host of historical and archaeological monuments, the best is probably Dun Beag (stone circle), near Struan. Dunvegan is also well worth a visit and a short walk in Portree Forest will set you up for a snooze on the way back.

You’ll travel along one of the most dramatic 45-mile stretches of scenery you can imagine. Stop off at the Glenfinnan Monument and visitor centre where you’ll hear the story of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. At Morar you’ll discover white sandy beaches, and a dramatic horizon filled by Skye, Rhum and Eigg.

When you arrive at Mallaig, have a creamy, whippy ice cream on the shore, or visit the Mallaig Marine World and Mallaig Heritage centre, where you’ll uncover a wealth of historical facts and tales about the area.

Discover Oban – The Unofficial Capital of the West Highlands

Oban is a town that has inspired creativity amongst many writers, artists and composers alike. The air is so clear in Oban, painters and artists travel from all over the world to take advantage.

The climate is mild all year round, warmed by the Gulf stream, sit back relax looking out to sea you’ll feel like you’re in another world free from all the stresses of everyday life.

Oban is a busy working port as well as a great holiday town. Pleasure boats, huge ferries and small working fishing boats all rub shoulders in the impressive harbour.

McCaig’s Tower, a coliseum style monument, dating back not quite as far as the Roman ones, dominates the skyline. From the tower you’ll marvel at the views across Oban Bay to the Isles of Kerrera, Mull and Lismore.

When you visit Oban distillery you’ll taste some fine malt whisky and see how it’s made. At Caithness Glass centre, you can learn the secret skills of glass blowing, or watch traditional highland tartan kilts being made.

Travel on the Great Glen route to Inverness. Take time for plenty of stops along the way. Stop at the Loch Ness visitor centre at Drumnadrochit (that’s drum – na – droch – it), you’ll see the Loch Ness monster and listen to all the historical tales of the area.

There’s a loch cruise if you fancy going Nessie hunting, or just want to relax on the water.

Inverness recently became a city, and there’s shops to match, with the only Marks and Spencers in the highlands.

If you really like the sea life, how about Dolphin watching on the Moray Firth, taking one of the scheduled trips from Inverness harbour.
